Creating Lasting Change Across Mason and Manistee Counties

Every community deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Across Mason and Manistee Counties, families work hard every day to build stable lives, support their children, care for neighbors, and strengthen the places they call home. But challenges like financial hardship, limited access to resources, food insecurity, and barriers to education can make that difficult for many local residents.

At United Way of the West Shore, we believe lasting change happens when communities come together to support one another. That belief guides everything we do.

As part of the broader United Way network, our work aligns with four key areas that help communities grow stronger and more resilient: Youth Opportunity, Healthy Community, Financial Security, and Community Resiliency. While these focus areas are national priorities, their impact is deeply local.

Supporting Youth Opportunity

Every child deserves the chance to succeed — both inside and outside the classroom.

Through partnerships with local schools and community organizations, United Way of the West Shore works to help remove barriers that can stand in the way of learning. Our Resource Advocates help connect students and families with critical support services, ensuring that children have access to the tools and stability they need to thrive.

When families are connected to food assistance, transportation resources, housing support, or mental health services, students are better able to focus on learning, growth, and future opportunity.

Supporting youth means supporting the whole family.

Building a Healthy Community

Healthy communities are built on access, connection, and care.

Across Mason and Manistee Counties, many individuals and families face challenges related to nutrition, healthcare access, and navigating available support systems. United Way of the West Shore helps bridge those gaps by connecting residents with local resources and community partners that can provide assistance during difficult times.

Programs like nutrition assistance efforts in Manistee County and resource navigation through 211 help ensure neighbors can find support when they need it most.

A healthy community is one where people know they are not facing challenges alone.

Strengthening Financial Security

Financial stability affects nearly every aspect of a person’s life.

Unexpected hardships, rising costs, childcare needs, transportation barriers, or medical expenses can quickly create overwhelming stress for working families. Through Workplace Resource Advocates and community partnerships, United Way of the West Shore helps connect individuals with services and support systems that can help restore stability and create pathways forward.

Sometimes, one connection can change the course of a family’s future.

By helping residents navigate resources and overcome barriers, we are working to strengthen not only individual households, but the long-term health of our entire region.

Moving Forward Together

Real change does not happen overnight. It happens through consistent partnership, local leadership, and communities that are willing to invest in one another.

Every program supported, every volunteer hour given, and every partnership formed contributes to a stronger community for everyone.

At United Way of the West Shore, we remain committed to creating positive, measurable, long-term change throughout our region — because when communities work together, lasting impact becomes possible.
